The Story

"It’s a mysterious fantasy- a story, a memory, a dream..."

Collecting antique curiosities from an early age, Pride & Prejudice has discovered a passion for creating eccentric artwork and jewellery. These intriguing objects are inspired by moments in history, particularly collages in dadaism of the 1920's.

Sylke Joa's background as a designer stems from the world of fine arts, achieving an MA at London's Royal College of Art. Her particular approach to jewellery making is visualising a story to tell. Sylke travels to some of the world's prime locations in antique trade to discover forgotten trinkets, such as victorian lockets, real life insects, fossil finds and antique gemstones. The fusion of rare antiquities with modern materials, such as perspex, achieves these fascinating little 'universes'.

Intricate and delicate, Pride & Prejudice's handmade jewellery collection reaches out for the person with an admiration and passion for the eccentric, with a sense of playfulness and love for artistic detail. Each unique piece of jewellery has a story attached to it, with the intention to awaken an emotion, and evoke a memory.

Sylke Joa also runs her own antique business which is embedded in this creative label. Her admiration of nature is explored in exquisite taxidermy; from flamboyant flamingos to observant owls. In between producing her artwork and jewellery, Sylke takes time to delve into the world of vintage clothing.

"Each artwork is charged with a story or memory, in which the found object serves as the starting point - the foundation of my work."  - Sylke Joa
